Joy Ceramics Sample Pieces
At Joy Ceramics we make items that are wheel thrown, hand built, slip cast, and that have digitally printed ceramic images. We use glazes that we formulated as well as commercial glazes and underglazes. Items are made in porcelain, stoneware, and earthenware. Porcelain fires at very high temperatures (about 2300 degrees Fahrenheit), stoneware generally fires slightly lower (about 2100 degrees Fahrenheit), and earthenware fires at the lowest temperatures (about 1900 degrees Fahrenheit). Porcelain and stoneware vitrify during firing and do not absorb water after their glaze firing. This makes them dishwasher safe, microwave safe, and oven safe. In terms of using in the oven the key is to avoid thermal shock so you would not for example take a piece from the oven and place it in the freezer.
Earthenware usually is glazed everywhere since it can absorb water on areas that are not glazed. Once it is glazed to have complete coverage it is safe in the dishwasher and microwave, since all water is driven out of the piece when fired during glazing at high temperature (1900 degrees Fahrenheit).
